Joker’s Hand was formed in Santa Cruz, CA, by two students attending UCSC.  As roommates, Kevin Kawano (vocals, guitar, bass, drums) and Matt Lau (vocals, guitar, bass, piano) discovered one another’s passion for music and combined their voices and musical skills to create a contemporary sound reminiscent of great bands of the past.

The band’s setlist includes numerous original songs written by the duo, along with their own take on covers ranging from the 60’s to present.Joker’s Hand plays rock music, with influences from other genres such as pop, alternative, reggae, and punk/grunge.

Their performances have been described as energetic, with vocal harmony hooks and extensive guitar work. Although the band is a duo, Joker’s Hand often performs with additional musicians, such as a touring drummer (depending on the venue.)

Kevin began playing the guitar at the age of 9, followed by the bass and drums.  His major musical influences are The Beatles, Cream, U2, Green Day, and blink-182.

Matt began playing the piano at the age of 5, later the viola, guitar and bass. Matt’s influential bands include Foo Fighters, Basement, Twin Peaks, and Nirvana.

Kevin and Matt are both songwriters, writing songs individually and collaboratively.  They also produce their own tracks in the studio and their own music videos. Their debut album, “Year Four,” was released in 2018 on iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, and every major streaming platform.
